Choosing The Right Pearl Earrings For You

July 30th, 2009

When choosing pearl earrings, you should first decide what type of pearl you would like and how much you are willing to spend, for all pearls are not created equal.  To help determine the quality you would like and the amount you are willing to spend, you should first know a little about pearls.  There are four types of pearls:  freshwater pearls, Akoya pearls, South Seas pearls, and Tahitian pearls.  Freshwater pearls are the least valuable of all four types.  Pearls are graded A, AA, AA+ and AAA, with Grade A pearls being worth only a fraction of  Grade AAA pearls.

Grading of pearls is based on several factors:  pearl lustre, nacre thickness, shape, color, size, surface texture and matching.  The lustre of a pearl is perhaps the most important quality, as it will reflect the thickness of the nacre.  A high lustre, giving almost a mirror-like sheen, is a good indication of a thick nacre.  The more thick the nacre, or protective coating formed in the oyster, the longer the life of the pearl.  Finding a flawless pearl is often very difficult, but a high Grade pearl will have very few blemishes.  The color of the pearl may somewhat influence price, but is more often just a matter of the buyer’s preference.  Size will also determine value, as the larger the pearl, the more costly.  Pearls also come in a variety of shapes, but round is the most desired and will be more costly.  Matching refers to how well each pearl in the pearl earrings match others in the set.

A combination of all these factors will decide the grade of the pearls, and will determine the overall quality and value.  If you’re looking to invest in a quality pair of earrings, be sure to choose a store which grades carefully and provides information on nacre thickness and texture.  Many of the pearl earrings you will find at discount stores are of inferior quality.  If quality isn’t that important, these earrings will be fine, endure for a few years and look good with that basic black dress.

What can be better than a pearl earring? Nothing is more classic or timeless than these elegant jewels. They are a family possession that are often times passed down from generation to generation, building more and more meaning as time passes. They are wonderful heirlooms to keep, gifting them off to children or grandchildren when the time is right. Women, and girls alike, have always embraced the traditional pearl for its beauty and elegance. When wearing a pearl, there is always the feeling of knowing you look graceful and well-dressed. Because pearls are such classic jewels, they can be paired perfectly with nearly any outfit or gown. They can spruce up an ordinary outfit and make it one step more refined. They can be simple enough to wear with any everyday outfit.

If you do not yet own a set of pearl earrings it is important to look into what kind of jewels you wish to purchase. There are many different colors that pearls come in – white, pink, black, grey, peach, yellow, gold and green. Once you have determined exactly which color it is that you wish to own, you can begin to look into what style you would like. Pearls come in many different pairings, or simply by themselves. They can be accompanied by other jewels, such as topaz and emeralds.

Oftentimes pearl earrings can be fabricated. To avoid buying a fake set of pearls, look into buying from a reputable seller or pearl distributor. Buying from a jeweler, rather than offline or from less trustworthy shop, will guarantee that you get a verified jewel. When buying, as always, do your research. Know what you want and what to look for in the vast and varied world of pearls. If price is an issue, remember that such a classic and important jewel will always be a wonderful gift to children or grandchildren, making them that much more important as generations come and go within your family

Pearl Jewelry

July 14th, 2009

Every woman should own a strand of pearls. However, it is important to know what you are looking for when you are buying pearl jewelry. Pearls come in a number of colors and shapes. Value is determined based on the luster, shape, size and source of the pearl.

Pearls can be either cultured and natural. Cultured means that they have been created with human intervention, and natural means that the pearl is formed in the wild with no human intervention at all. Most pearls on the market today are cultured pearls created on a pearl farm. Of course, pearl jewelry made from natural pearls is much more valuable due to the rarity of natural pearls.

Pearls also come from both freshwater and saltwater pearls. Saltwater pearls are the most valuable. Freshwater pearls come from freshwater mussels and are more common.

The larger the pearl, the higher the price, but the value of pearls and its use in jewelry is mostly determined by its shape. Perfectly round pearls are more valuable and are used in necklaces. Semi-round are also used in necklaces, particularly when their flaws can be hidden. Tear-drop and pear-shaped pearls are used as centerpieces in necklaces or in earrings.

Pearls also come in a variety of colors. White pearls are traditionally more sought after, but recently black pearls have become more popular, particularly the saltwater variety. Pearls can also be found in pink, green, blue, and champagne, but these colors are harder to find.

According to many jewelers, luster is the most important factor in determining the value of pearl jewelry. Luster is most simply defined as the way an object reflects light. The more layers a pearl has, the more valuable it is.

When you are buying pearl jewelry, be sure to ask your jeweler about the source of the pearl, and pay close attention to its size, shape, color and luster.

Pearl Earring Classic Addition to Woman’s Wardrobe

July 10th, 2009

Peek into the jewelry wardrobe of any well-dressed woman and you are likely to find a pearl earring among her favorite classic pieces.  The pearl has been prized since ancient times for its perfection and absolute beauty.  This gem formed in the sea starting with a grain of sand within an oyster symbolizes all the best qualities human beings aspire to - honesty, integrity, purity, charity and wisdom.

Pearls used to create a pearl earring can be either natural or cultured, a technique of artificially stimulating the oyster to produce a pearl,  perfected by Kokichi Mikimoto whose sought-after brand is now known worldwide. The shape of pearls in their natural state are often not of perfect quality necessary for fine jewelry, so most people opt for the finest cultured pearls when making their selection.  There are a number of factors to consider when making a pearl earring selection.

Look at the body color or main color of the pearl, which can range from the very common white, cream and silver to the more exotic and highly prized black, gold, green and blue. In addition, there is an overtone of color called the translucent color atop this body color that adds warmth, luster and may even change a creamy white pearl into a pearl accented by green or blue.

Generally, the larger the pearl’s size, the more valuable it is, with sizing measured in milimeters using the pearl’s diameter. Select a pearl with high luster, its ability to reflect light. Shapes vary from round and symmetrical to the more valuable baroque or irregular style.

A pearl earring can represent a significant investment, so be sure to care wisely for these beautiful gems. Store them in a soft cloth or felt bag away from other gemstones or jewelry, as they can be easily scratched or even cracked.  Apply your make-up, hair spray or any other chemicals prior to attaching your earrings as these elements can quickly dull their luster. Clean your pearl earring with a soft dry cloth after every wearing, and occasionally wash them with a damp cloth and mild soap to extend their beauty.

Pearl Earrings

July 3rd, 2009

Pearl earrings are one of the most common ways to purchase pearls today, only comparable to a pearl necklace.  Pearl earrings can be found in many stores today, from discount stores to high end retailers.  All, or almost all, jewelry stores today sell pearl earrings.  But there are many other pearl products, such as necklaces and rings.  Earrings tend to be the most popular as more people can afford cultured pearls than completely natural pearls.

Pearls are a beautiful and natural way to decorate jewelry and other fine goods.  Pearls are created by mollusks.  All mollusks produce a substance that can be called a pearl, but not all are jewelry quality pearls.  Pearls can be produced in two ways.  Natural pearls are created by the mollusk when an irritant managed to get inside a shell.  Cultured pearls are man made by putting a starter material inside the mollusk to for it to create a pearl.  Pearls can also come in many different colors, ranging from a brilliant white to a deep black color that has a silver sheen.  Natural, high quality pears have been as highly valued as gemstones for centuries.  Most civilizations around the world know about pearls.  But only in the past one hundred years have people learned to cultivate pearls, only recently have pearls been used only for jewelry.  In the past though, pearls were often worn stitched onto clothing often worn by royalty.  Many medieval and renaissance era portraits of royalty show them with many pearls sewn onto their clothing.

The variety of pearl earrings available to consumers can be vast.  Not all pearls are round, creating tear drops or fused pearls, oval pears and pearls still attached to pieces of shell.  There are simple stud earrings to very complex multi pearl designs.  When choosing earrings make sure you are happy with the style and the shape, along with the complexity or simplicity of the earrings.

Pearl Earrings

Whether it is your mother, sister, daughter, aunt, wife, or girlfriend, giving gifts such as pearl earrings can relay the perfect message to any or all of those members of your life or family.

There are four main types of pearls that you can consider and look for while shopping for your gift, such as Freshwater, Akoya, South Sea, and Tahitian pearls.  Each of these types of pearls are unique in their own way, and you should consider the type of pearl when preparing to purchase a set of pearl earrings for your loved ones.

Freshwater Pearls

These pearls come from freshwater mussels, and they are not distinctly round in a variety of colors.  Most believe that these types of pearls are exactly round and white in color, but this is not always the case. There are close to 31 states that have freshwater pearls available for production.

Akoya Pearls

These pearls come from akoya oysters that can be found in Asia.  Their default color is white, but they can be a cream, rose, or silver color also.  They are also smaller than most pearls, ranging from 2 to 11 millimeters in size and are distinctively round.

South Sea Pearls

These pearls are much larger in size than the others above because the creature producing the pearl can grow to be quite large also.  They come from an oyster called Pinctada maxima.  The range on the size of these pearls is anywhere between 9 to 20 millmeters, and the colors range from white, gold, and silver that is much different from the other types of pearls.

Pearl Earrings

June 21st, 2009

When you think of classic jewelry for yourself, your mother, or grandmother, pearls always come to mind. There is something so timeless about pearls. Whether it was Jackie O wearing them with a sweater set, or Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The simplest way to wear pearls is by dressing up your ear lobes with a gorgeous set of pearl earrings.

Pearls are an unique piece of jewelry because they are completely organic, being produced from a tiny piece of grit or sand that has made its way into a clam or oyster. Because pearls come from so many different of these mollusks, they are classified by their origin and shapes. Pearl come from four different locations, natural, cultured, freshwater, and saltwater pearls. Because of the rarity of pearls, they are quite expensive and are usually sold by carat weight. Due to the cost of pearls, most pearls in today’s market are considered to be vintage pearls.

The shape of the pearl should also be taken into consideration when choosing your new pearl earrings. They come in spherical, symmetrical and baroque shapes. The rounder the pearl shape, the more desirable and the more expensive thus making the spherical pearls the most expensive you can find.

Symmetrical pearls are not as expensive as the spherical pearls. They include the pear shaped pearls and those that have symmetry from one side to the next but are not round.

Baroque pearls are the most affordable of all pearls because they are irregularly shaped. If you are looking for pearl earrings that are unique, these can be your best bet as they all vary from one pearl to the next but are just as beautiful. Baroque pearls are as unique as the person who is receiving them.

Pearl earrings are a great gift for any occasion such as a wedding present, a birthday, Mother’s Day, or as a heirloom to be passed down for generations to come.
